Why the Rich Get Richer

Robert Kiyosaki, Why the Rich Get Richer
“It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.”

 – Charles Dickens

2010: The Best of Times or the Worst?

Is the recession over? Are happy days really here again? Paraphrasing Dickens, my answer is, “For people who are prepared, 2010 will be the best of times. For many, 2010 will be the worst of times.”

The following are a few of my predictions and reasons behind them…

Prediction #1: The real estate market will crash again.

chart5.gif

Pictured above is a graph of mortgage resets. In simple terms, a mortgage reset is when a mortgage comes due. In normal times, refinancing was a simple process…but these are not normal times. Some points of interest:

1. In September 2008, the mortgage resets hit $35 billion that month. That was the exact time the financial crisis hit. When people could not afford to refinance and began to default, the stock market and banking industry crashed.

2. The eye of the storm: In the summer of 2009 mortgage resets were low -- around $15 billion a month. This is when optimists began to see “green shoots” in the economy. The green shoots were the eye of the storm. In 2010, as I see it, the second half of the financial hurricane hits. By late 2011, the resets climb to nearly $40 billion a month. The storm will not end until 2012.

3. The first half of the storm was primarily due to subprime defaults. The second half of the storm will hit more solid homeowners. The question is, can they weather the storm? Will Mac Mansion foreclosures be next?

4. In America, there are over 40 million people who own more than two homes. Can they afford to carry and refinance two or more mortgages?

5. Since home values have gone down, many homeowners will find they owe more than their home(s) are worth. Will the bank be kind to them?

6. The time for using your home as an ATM is over. This is crushing retailers and retail real estate. Shopping centers are in trouble. Strip malls are empyting as shopkeepers close -- permanently. This will lead to the crash of the office, warehouse, and other commercial properties.

My prediction: Obviously these are the best of times if you are a buyer of distressed properties and the worst of times if you are a seller.

Other things I am watching for in 2010:

1. Will China crash? America’s crash has hit China in the gut. The Chinese are laying off millions of workers. Only massive government bailout is keeping the economy afloat. The Chinese boom will eventually go bust…but will it bust in 2010? Only time will tell.

2. When America stopped importing from China, China stopped importing from the rest of the world. This affects Asian countries as well as Australia, Brazil, and other suppliers of raw materials.

3. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is replacing toxic debt with new debt. By protecting his friends in the mega-banks, he is turning the U.S. into a zombie nation. The recession is over, but America is entering an era we will be calling The New Depression, a period when the rich become extremely rich but everyone else becomes poorer. Taxes will kill anyone working for a paycheck.

4. The U.S. dollar will grow weaker. If the dollar strengthens, we will have more unemployment because our goods become too expensive and we will export less.

5. The deficit will increase. The bailouts for the rich are killing the economy.

Chart6.gif

6. Israel may attack Iran. Israel will not tolerate Iran developing nuclear power, even if Iran claims it is for peaceful purposes. If there is an attack, oil prices will go through the roof.

7. Dead cat bounce. The current stock market rally will probably turn into a dead cat bounce. If the Dow drops below 6500, 5,000 may be the next stop.

The Best of Times

I know I sound painfully pessimistic. I know my predictions are bad news for most people. Yet, for others, bad news is good news.

The following are the bright spots for people who are prepared.

Prediction #2: Gold, silver, and oil will continue to be safe investments in 2010.

The following recaps the year-end prices of gold and silver:

YEAR GOLD SILVER
2000 $ 273 $ 4.57
2001 $ 279 $ 4.57
2002 $ 348 $ 4.78
2003 $ 416 $ 5.92
2004 $ 438 $ 6.79
2005 $ 518 $ 8.80
2006 $ 638 $12.78
2007 $ 838 $14.77
2008 $ 882 $11.33
2009 $1100 (approx) $17.50 (approx)

In 2009, the Dow rose approximately 18%. Gold rose approximately 25%. Silver rose approximately 50%.

By the end of 2010, I predict gold will be at $1,775 an ounce, silver at $24 an ounce, and oil at $85 a barrel. If Israel attacks Iran, these predictions will be blown away.

Prediction #3: The next market to crash will be commercial real estate.

Cash flow positive real estate will be even more affordable. 2010 through 2012 will be a real estate buffet for those with cash and access to credit.

My Personal Investments

As I stated in 2002, “You have up to the year 2010 to become prepared.”

The following are things I have done to prepare myself:

1. I started The Rich Dad Company in 1997 because I saw this crisis coming. For the past three years, I have tightened internal controls and prepared for global expansion via a franchise distribution system. The company is debt free with strong income.

2. 2009 was my best real estate year to date. With the Fed handing out large sums of money and pension funds looking for projects to invest in, my real estate holding company has acquired tens of millions of dollars for acquisition of bankrupt properties and development projects. Development projects are affordable again, as labor, material, and land costs are low and the government is generous with 40-year, low interest, non-recourse loans. People still need a roof over their heads.

3. My oil development projects have done well. We drilled three wells and hit oil on two of them. Government tax breaks for oil exploration remain generous, even for dry holes. Even if the economy crashes, we will still burn oil.

4. I took 90% of my money out of the stock market in 2007. If the Fed raises interest rates, the stock market and real estate market will collapse.

5. I loaded up on gold and silver between 1996 and 2004.

6. With the Fed printing trillions of dollars, cash is trash and savers are losers. As soon as I have excess cash I invest in oil, real estate, gold, and silver.

7. In a zero-interest-rate environment, debtors are winners…but only if you have good debt…debt that’s paid by tenants.

In Conclusion

A few years ago, Japan was ‘King of the Financial World.’ Japan’s economy was the world’s second largest economy -- till the bubble burst in 1990. Japan’s budget went into deficit in 1993. Since then, the deficit has averaged 5.4 percent of GDP per year. As a result, Japanese government debt is now 200 percentof GDP today. The U.S. is following Japan, and China will follow the U.S.

We will not see much inflation because the Fed is not able to print enough money to replace the losses from the burst of the credit bubble. Also, factories have too much excess capacity due to lack of demand, which means prices for consumer goods will remain low and unemployment will remain high. Instead, we will see inflation in gold, silver, oil, some stocks, some real estate sectors, and food -- not because values are going up but because the dollar is going down.

Welcome to The New Depression. And may these times be the best of times for you.

TENNESSEE DVD REVIEW:
Mariah Carey is Vibrant on Screen

A bible belt cross-country youthful journey of discovery in search of family reconciliation, Tennessee is emotionally well meaning enough. But the film more than misses the mark as a road movie whose unintended sense of cultural distance and mostly generic country characters with jarring cosmopolitan leanings, come off rather like big city tourism in out of the way places.
Carter (Adam Rothenberg) is big brother and young surrogate dad to Ellis (Ethan Peck). High school football star Carter abruptly fled Tennessee and their physically and emotionally abusive father some years ago, with Carter in tow along with their mother, who has recently passed away. And Carter has been raising Ellis since then, in a trailer in the New Mexico wilderness.
When Ellis is diagnosed with leukemia and Carter doesn't qualify as a potential life saving bone marrow donor, the younger sibling convinces his resistant brother to go look for their estranged father, who might provide the necessary match instead. Along the way they encounter Krystal (Mariah Carey), a sassy Texas truckstop waitress with dreams of becoming a country singer. And she joins up with them on a whim to go make a pitch in the Nashville music scene, while escaping abuse of her own from her domineering highway patrol spouse.
Mariah Carey is more than just the big star in this small story. She's the warm, charismatic, and deliciously down home presence that spontaneously fills the screen with charm to spare, in this comparatively weak and maudlin story. Though it's unfortunate and rather lopsided, that the details of her own character lack the attention and depth lavished upon the male protagonists.
In addition, what we have here is once again the black mammy syndrome, as Carey seems to be around mostly to tend to the physical and emotional needs of those perpetually moping males. She's even repeatedly fetching them food, long after Krystal has called it quits with waitressing. And in the brief interlude when she does get to grab some spotlight and show her far too professional musical skills as a supposed amateur on a stage in an unusually receptive redneck bar, Mariah through no fault of her own, feels as fish out of water forced as you can get.
Tennessee has its moments of tenderly spun brotherly love. But all the secondary characters lack a sense of being fully realized, particularly the many abusive one-note males, seemingly on hand more to make a vague point about domestic violence not being cool, than dramatically resolving or explaining anything about that terrible trauma.

Fried tempura ice cream

MANILA, Philippines—Ever wondered how fried tempura ice cream is made?

Tempura is a Japanese specialty that means batter-dipped. For this recipe, instead of using typical pieces of seafood or vegetables dipped in soy sauce and wasabi, delightful scoops of ice cream are used, drizzled with chocolate syrup, cherries and slivers of almonds—quite a dessert to impress family and friends.

“Batter-dipped ice cream is usually deep-fried,” says Boyet Llamador, head chef of Tempura Japanese Grill (tel. 3747460) on Thompson Square, Tomas Morato St., Quezon City. “This recipe, however, requires timing and a good deep-fryer to fry the tempura ice cream. The warm crunchy tempura perfectly pairs with the cold creaminess of the underlying ice cream.”

If you heed some tips, this fried dessert, one of the bestsellers at Tempura in Quezon City, is not so hard to make at home. All its ingredients are in grocery stores. The batter is basic pancake batter with a pinch of salt.

Make sure to serve the tempura ice cream immediately after frying. It is best that, while the tempura ice cream is frozen, you pour the oil into a deep-fat fryer or a heavy-bottomed stockpot. Heat the oil over medium-high heat.

You can either use slices of loaf bread or taisan to bind the ice cream. And as optional toppings, wafer cookie, whipped cream, strawberry sauce, fresh fruit and powdered sugar are also ideal.

You can also try different flavors of ice cream.

Ingredients:
Slices of bread
Ice cream, any
flavor
Cooking oil
Chocolate syrup
Cherry
Cornstarch for dusting
For batter mix:
150 g cake flour
1 egg yolk
Pinch of salt
8 oz cold water

For suggestions, e-mail the author at vbaga@inquirer.com.ph.

1. IN A MIXING bowl, combine flour, egg and ice-cold water. Whisk well. Set aside.

2. REMOVE the outer layer of the bread. Place bread on a flat surface with aluminum foil. Press bread firmly using your fingers.

3. PLACE three scoops of ice cream in the middle of the bread.

4. ROLL bread tightly. Then place in freezer, and let sit until completely frozen.

5. REMOVE wrap and roll frozen tempura in cornstarch.

6. DIP TEMPURA into the batter mixture. Cover tempura with the batter evenly.

7. MEANWHILE, heat oil in deep-fryer to 375°F. If you do not have a deep-fryer, you can use a hot pot of oil. Carefully drop the battered ice cream into the hot oil by using kitchen tongs or a slotted spoon.

8. QUICKLY fry tempura for approximately 5 to 10 seconds, until the tempura batter has turned golden.

9. LET COOL for a few seconds. Cut into four pieces. Transfer in a platter. Drizzle with chocolate syrup. Add cherry.

The Dead Sea heals
By Rafael Castillo, MD

JERICHO, WESTBANK (PALESTINIAN Territory)—We’ve heard and read a lot of the healing properties of the Dead Sea, something which dates back to ancient times. Its water and mud are supposed to heal and beautify. The ancient Romans and Jews built bathhouses on the banks of the Dead Sea utilizing its water and mud.

King Herod himself was said to have frequently visited the Dead Sea’s hot springs and found it not only curative of his physical ailments but soothing as well for his frayed nerves. The beautiful Queen Cleopatra was also one of the beneficiaries of the effects of the Dead Sea’s minerals on the human skin, and used the salts and mud from the Dead Sea to maintain her youth. King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba likewise were frequent bathers in the Dead Sea.

The Dead Sea is a strangely hypersalty body of water around 76 km long, 17 km wide, 1,050 sq km and 365 meters deep, according to our tour guide. It is surrounded by Israel, the Westbank and Jordan. It’s a paradox of sorts. It’s supposed to be higher than sea level, yet it is the lowest point on earth, 400 meters (1,300 feet) below sea level.

It’s called the Dead Sea because no fish or anything living could live in it due to its excessive salt and mineral content. However, the positive combination of the minerals and salts accounts for its healing properties. It’s quite paradoxical that a sea (it’s actually a lake), wherein no aquatic creatures can thrive, can be a source of good health and beauty.

The salinity of the Dead Sea reaches a concentration of approximately 340 grams per liter, which is 10 times more concentrated than the Mediterranean Sea or any other sea. Add to it the high mineral content and you can imagine the high buoyancy of the water. Even if one does not know how to swim, one can float on it effortlessly. You see many people floating on their backs like they’re lying on invisible mattresses. We saw one making a show of it by reading a newspaper as he floated.

Ailments that could be cured

The list of ailments regular bathing in the Dead Sea could cure is long. Among these diseases are all forms of allergies from eczema to bronchial asthma, arthritis of any type, muscle and nerve disorders, various forms of metabolic disorders, psychological and stress-related disturbances including chronic fatigue syndrome and insomnia.

I must admit that when our tour guide eagerly narrated the health benefits of the Dead Sea, I thought it was too good to be true. I was having my bouts of allergic rhinitis at that time, so I thought I made a good case to find out if it was really as good as it was reported to be. Before going to the sea, we joined a group of elderly Europeans in covering most parts of our bodies with mud from a pond by the shore. I felt like we were carabaos waddling in the mud. And as we emerged from the mud pond, we looked like horrible creatures from deep under, walking slowly on the slippery mud to the sea.

Like a giant spa

It was quite an experience. The Dead Sea is like a giant spa. The water is warm and it’s like you’ve mixed a gallon of olive oil in your bath tub. The effortless floating really gives one a feeling of complete relaxation and tranquility. It makes one feel like no cares or worries are too heavy for the water to carry. The oily sensation also gives one a soothing feeling. One’s skin and hair feel soft and frequent bathers say this lasts for several days after.

The only side-effect I could think of in bathing in the Dead Sea is that you can’t swim in it with your eyes open. It really hurts when the water gets into your eyes because of its high salt and mineral content. But even if it does, you just close your eyes for half a minute or so and the hurting sensation disappears.

And how about my allergic rhinitis? It’s too good to be true but it’s quite true. After the Dead Sea bath, and a day after as I write this, I have not soaked a single tissue paper with my runny nose. It only goes to show that despite all the wonders we now benefit from chemically synthesized breakthrough medicines, we should not forget that nature has a huge store of therapies and healing substances which can humble even the best medical specialists in the world.

Eat guava and ‘santol’ to manage stress
By Cory Quirino
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 19:20:00 10/19/2009

THERE IS A CENTER OF ENERGY IN ALL of us. This center produces physical sensation.

Here are some questions from readers related to the center of energy.

Q: Please explain why during moments of fear or insecurity I feel something in the “pit of my stomach.”

Your stomach is in the central area of your body. And every organ in this area is affected each time you are unable to fulfill a wish that is very important to you. The mildest form is “butterflies in your stomach.” If the agitation or stress continues, it may lead to ulcer. Stomach acidity happens each time the brain is overloaded with fear, panic, etc. Balance your body chemistry and reduce acid in your stomach by understanding the real cause of your fear. Have faith. Affirm: “I can and I will.” Above all, stop worrying!

Q: Why do I have regular food and sexual cravings?

A craving is a signal that your mind, body or spirit needs to fill. It also may mean, as in food, that you lack a certain mineral/vitamin. Sugar cravings are caused by an unbalanced diet. It could mean that you have a carbohydrate overload or your hormonal balance is upset.
Sexual cravings are symptoms of fear and doubt in one’s self. Sexual interaction may satisfy you temporarily but it also means there will never be any satisfaction you could get from just one person. This is the sad truth unless you deal with your real problem. If you don’t search your psyche well enough to heal your inner hurts, then strangers and strange encounters will continually magnetize you. People and partners will merely be objects to be used and not to be loved.

Q: How can I fight stress?

The word “fight” is already stressful. Let’s use the word “manage.” This is more positive. Here’s a list of things you can do:

Declare 10 minutes of your time everyday as time-out. Simply close your eyes. Inhale softly, quietly.
If you can’t turn off the lights, put on your shades.

Load up on vitamin B complex.

Try aromatherapy by lighting up lemon grass room fragrance sticks.

Spray on your palms and inhale with closed eyes one of the most effective and instant mood lifters in the market today—Bliss, a blend of lavender, mint and eucalyptus. (Nutramedica Inc., 376-4535)

Sip herbal teas like chamomile, lavender, rose. Or try organic ginger tea with native muscovado sugar from the mountains of Nueva Vizcaya, produced by the farmers’ cooperative (092-28689752).

Harness the healing powers of guava and santol through their organic jam and jelly.

Always remember, according to Dr. Gary Zukav in “The Heart of the Soul”—“Each decision is a moment of creativity.”

Wheatgrass vs. hypertension, chronic fatigue

Wheatgrass vs. hypertension, chronic fatigue

MANILA, Philippines – Doctor Ang Peng Tiam, head of the Department for Medical Oncology, Singapore General Hospital, has treated more than 7,000 patients. He believes that cancer is not a terminal illness.

In his book, “Surviving Cancer: Stories of Hope” to be launched on April 24 at Manila Polo Club, he cites the cases of two Filipino patients, a 38-year-old man with colon cancer and a woman in her 40s with breast cancer. Through sheer determination, discipline, and faith, both have beaten the dreaded disease (For info, call 7471622 or 0922-8649030).

According to Doctor Earl Mindell’s “Vitamin Bible for the 21st Century,” there are powerful anticancer properties in foods such as beta-carotene, quercetin, indoles and isothiocyanatos in cruciferous vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids.

The winning foods are carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, cantaloupe, squash, papaya, sweet potatoes, kale, green leafy vegetables, bok choy, radish, celery, spinach, sprouts of all kinds, bean sprouts, alfalfa, radish, wheatgrass, oat bran, wheat bran, rice bran, ginger, horseradish, curcumin from turmeric, capsaicin from red hot chili, powerful mushrooms like reishi, ganoderma, shitake, tuna, mackerel, salmon and sardines.

Stay away from high-risk cancer substances found in alcohol, tobacco, trans fats, processed meats, preservatives, BHA, BHT, food dyes red #3, blue #2, green #3, citrus red #2, sodium nitrite, propyl gallate, coloring and artificial seasoning.

Cleanse vegetables well before eating to flush out all the pesticides. Go organic if you must.

Booster tea

Make it a habit to have a cup of freshly grated ginger in a cup of hot water. Allow to steep for five minutes, strain and sip slowly. Ginger fights stomach acidity and indigestion, speeds up metabolism/fat burning, and has antiviral properties.

Green blood

Blood is what carries the nutrients to the organs of the body. Therefore, the cleaner the blood, the better health you can achieve.

The rage nowadays is wheatgrass, fondly called green blood by health enthusiasts.
Doctor Omar Arabia, resource person of DZMM/ABS-CBN, has a cancer support group and clinic (tel. 4266363) specializing in advanced stage cancer. He always serves his patients a shot of freshly juiced wheatgrass.

This immature sprout, a member of the cereal family like barley, oats, and rye, contains a powerhouse of nutrients. Its beneficial effect is felt within 20 minutes of drinking it. Containing 17 amino acids, 13 vitamins, 10 minerals, fiber and enzymes, wheatgrass is high in iron, magnesium and potassium.

Malaysian company EasyPha-Max grows and harvests wheatgrass (including the roots) through the aero-phonics system, assuring a pollution-free indoor environment for the wheatgrass nursery.

The risk of drinking freshly grown wheatgrass is the problem of molds and bacteria. Drying and powdering wheatgrass and placing them in handy hygienic packets make it all the more practical for the person on the go. Anyone who has high blood, chronic fatigue and allergies will benefit from a daily dose of wheatgrass. Call 8901111 or 0918-9512008.

Stop counting time

The best way to manage stress is to stop counting time. The pressures of work, deadlines, emotional and mental challenges are enough to depress the immune system. Did you know that soothing music can bring down the stress hormone cortisol in the body within minutes of hearing it? So, manage your stress levels by listening to music everyday.

Affirm: “I am feeling better day by day.” Let this line sink in. “Life may be a race to others but to those who don’t run the race and take it slower, the music of their song is never over.”

Love and light!

Types of High Blood Pressure
By Mark Stibich, Ph.D., About.com Guide
Updated: February 19, 2007

Types of Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

* Essential Hypertension is the most common type. There is no specific and underlying cause for essential hypertension. Lifestyle factors and other risk factors all increase a person's chance of getting essential hypertension.

* Secondary Hypertension is caused by another health condition such as diabetes, kidney problems or tumors. Once the other condition is controlled, blood pressure usually returns to normal.

* White Coat Hypertension is caused by a person's anxiety or stress levels being very high. Some people getanxious each time they see the doctor and have blood pressure readings higher than normal.

* Isolated Systolic Hypertension is hypertension in which only the systolic (upper) reading is high. This occurs in people over age 65 and is caused by a hardening of the arteries.

* Labile Hypertension is when a person's blood pressure changes often. These changes can be caused by emotions or stress.

* Malignant hypertension is a rare form of hypertension that is an emergency situation. Symptoms set in very quickly and there is a risk of seizures, stroke of even death.

Patients with essential hypertension have disturbed autonomic cardiovascular regulation and circadian pacemaker function. Recently, the biological clock was shown to be involved in autonomic cardiovascular regulation. Our objective was to determine whether enhancement of the functioning of the biological clock by repeated nighttime melatonin intake might reduce ambulatory blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial in 16 men with untreated essential hypertension to investigate the influence of acute (single) and repeated (daily for 3 weeks) oral melatonin (2.5 mg) intake 1 hour before sleep on 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure and actigraphic estimates of sleep quality.

Repeated melatonin intake reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure during sleep by 6 and 4 mm Hg, respectively. The treatment did not affect heart rate. The day–night amplitudes of the rhythms in systolic and diastolic blood pressures were increased by 15% and 25%, respectively. A single dose of melatonin had no effect on blood pressure. Repeated (but not acute) melatonin also improved sleep. Improvements in blood pressure and sleep were statistically unrelated. In patients with essential hypertension, repeated bedtime melatonin intake significantly reduced nocturnal blood pressure. Future studies in larger patient group should be performed to define the characteristics of the patients who would benefit most from melatonin intake. The present study suggests that support of circadian pacemaker function may provide a new strategy in the treatment of essential hypertension.

Definition:

Essential high blood pressure is also called essential hypertension or primary high blood pressure. Essential high blood pressure is the most common kind of high blood pressure. Almost 95% of people with high blood pressure have the essential or primary kind. In the essential type, high blood pressure occurs without any other medical cause of explanation. In other words, the high blood pressure is primary (not a result of another medical condition). Essential high blood pressure usually develops between the ages of 30 and 50. Control of essential high blood pressure varies for each individual.

Twin Rock

Twin Rock Beach Resort in Igang, Virac, Catanduanes is a must-see place whenever I'm in Virac. I've seen this place since 20 years ago and the magic of this place never pales to amaze me. No, it's got no nice swimming beach due to seaweeds on the shorelines but has some lagoon from the left side where one can enjoy diving and swimming.

One thing that I can connect to here is the scenery. It's just captivating.

On this chance, I gathered up my family, whoever is available and made our trip there. Took some pictures and experimented my version of the rush menu for chicken inasal.

The chicken was only included in the menu on our way. So we dropped off the wet market, bought the ingredients - chicken (leg is the only available when we got there), ginger, native vinegar, ground pepper, soy sauce. That's the combo I used and just splashed a good amount of Virac's native vinegar and that's it. Marinated the chicken for about an hour and have it barbeque-d slowly.
